ABSTRACT

I am not entirely surprised to find that the gap between myself and Robert Caper is not so wide as I might have suggested. I very much welcome his clarification of his views which read (at least to me) as substantially different in tone from his original argument. It is particularly illuminating to see the way he addresses the clinical material in my chapter, although this example was deliberately chosen as one which would meet his criteria for psychoanalysis while demonstrating that something additional to these was also in operation.
