ABSTRACT

Anthropology is an academic discipline that is both independent of psychiatry and at times closely linked. For anyone who thought that anthropology consisted of films on Channel 4 about exotic islands in the South Pacific, this chapter may come as something of a revelation. Its title is deliberately both positive and questioning. Positive, in the sense that it argues that there continues to be a place for anthropological inquiry in our research repertoire as mental health professionals. Questioning, in that it remains to be seen how acceptable anthropological inquiry is in the current research climate. Hence the reference to P values in the title.
