ABSTRACT

This paper concerns the development of two urban landscape technologies that help realize the design vision for the Sydney Olympics 2000 site at Homebush Bay. Specifically, the paper examines the development of structural soil and “eco-paving” for a major planting of Ficus hilli defining the eastern edge of Olympic Plaza. The paper also describes how these technologies connect conceptually and functionally, with the site's overall water management system, via constructed wetlands, creating a manufactured system. In doing so, the paper identifies key issues associated with the development of these technologies, emphasizing the benefits of a collaborative team response to the challenge of remade landscapes.
