ABSTRACT

Developments in the competitive environment of organisations as well as in technology (in particular ICT) urge organisations to reconsider their form, for example, by introducing eBusiness or by becoming a virtual organisation. ICT serves as an enabler for these new work developments, with demands from the environment providing the motivating force (e.g. Igbaria and Guimaraes 1999). A key term for the new work developments is ‘flexibility’, first, because management has a wider choice of forms to achieve a fit with the environment and, second, because the new organisational forms allow for more operational flexibility.
