ABSTRACT
The fame of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (Partido Socialista Obrero Español, PSOE) rests, among other factors, on its unusually long period in government, which lasted for almost 14 years from 1982 until 1996. Among the various explanations for the PSOE capacity to retain power, this chapter focuses on those involving the impact of economic conditions on electoral outcomes.
