INTRODUCTION

A recent review of operations strategy research emphasized the need to promote a greater contribution from empirical, field-based research (Filippini, 1997). The writer also concluded that the discipline of operations strategy has concentrated upon two common themes: process and content. But according to Miller and Roth (1994) ‘The development of strategic types is still lagging behind from both an empirical and theoretical standpoint’.
