It is an understatement to say that financial markets in East Asia have experienced substantial transformation and tumult in recent years. In the past five years, they have gone from the heady halcyon days of ‘Asian fever’ in the mid-1990s to collapse and subsequent partial recovery. 1 In the second half of the 1990s, East Asia's financial markets experienced the best and worst of times, and everything in between.
