ABSTRACT
The preceding chapters have been concerned with the external and internal disasters to the Royalist war effort in the autumn and winter of 1644-5, and it was this negative aspect of the picture which, as shown, most impressed contemporaries. Yet parallel to this recession were positive omens, which indicated that some strength survived in that effort at a local level.
