Democracy in Culture: American Individualisms
If there is such a thing as an American character or an American secular religion, it is indelibly stamped with the idea and practice of individualism. Individualism, along with liberty and equality, is also one of the core ideas of democracy. American history is a record of the defeat or erosion of ideas that have competed with individualism. Today, the ideology of individualism, though not always the practice of individuality, reigns supreme in American life.
