ABSTRACT

As has already been said, historic buildings are an essential part of the character and appearance of both our towns and country, and much of this derives from the uniqueness and variety of the buildings themselves. A high proportion of these buildings are often well looked after and maintained by their owners, and in some cases, the financial burden that falls upon them can be helped by grant-aid from the local authorities and English Heritage (or Cadw) in particular cases. It is perhaps a measure of the public interest in these buildings, that so many of their owners are prepared to keep them in good order.
