ABSTRACT

Achievement of faultless building is the aim of assured quality in construction. It cannot be achieved unless the design, and resulting construction works, follow the acknowledged rules of technology. Many factors influence the achievement of quality, ranging from the reliability of the initial brief, and the choice of the design team, to the thoroughness of commissioning on completion, monitoring in use and subsequent maintenance. These factors fall into four groups:

• quality of the briefing and design process, including reliability of information used; • quality of construction and commissioning process; • quality of products and systems used; and • quality of use of the building, and operation of its installed systems.
