ABSTRACT

Dublin, situated on the east coast, is the capital city of the Republic of Ireland. The Republic together with Northern Ireland, which forms part of the United Kingdom, constitute the territory of the island of Ireland. Total population is approximately 5 million of whom 3.5 million reside in the Republic. The city of Dublin and the evolution of its built environment mirror in many respects the political and economic history of the island. In a time dimension which extends from pre-Celtic origins to the still evident Viking, Norman and late medieval influences; the distinctive scale of eighteenth-century Georgian architecture through post-1960s development to the modern European capital city of the 1990s.
