ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the specific requirements of a night's stay in the outdoors. The design and layout can be based on some of the toilet designs, modified as necessary. The design concept for the site may be based around the opportunities provided by different vegetation types and the amount of enclosure they provide. Like other forms of recreation, as many camping areas as possible should be designed to be barrier free and offer universal access. A design for campsite utilities such as fire equipment, water, litter, grey water and chemical toilet disposal arranged into a neat enclosure provided with a lay-by and surfaced access. The design was constructed over several phases as new areas were opened and old ones were removed and re-vegetated. Staying overnight in a wild, remote and scenic place offers a rather different experience from staying in a motel, hotel or bed and breakfast.
