ABSTRACT
The renewal and regeneration of older towns and cities has had a major influence on the shape, nature and uses of urban areas in many parts of the world. It is the purpose of this chapter to set out the main periods in the renewal and regeneration of older urban areas drawing mainly on examples from the UK and the USA; to explore the forces and motivations underlying the different approaches identified; and to highlight the impact these different approaches have had on people and places.
