ABSTRACT

The key challenge, from the very first initiatives just before and after the Second World War to current Millennium-linked projects, has been to find the right balance between preservation and change. Conservation, almost by definition, involves reconciling a desire for continuity with the introduction of new uses, and purist preservation with needs to update the structure and image of a building. Project directors also have to achieve a balance in terms of appropriate and complementary uses and in gaining the right mix of public and private funding.
