ABSTRACT

For the second of our buildings occupied in 1997, we travel to the north-west of India, to the latitude of the Tropic of Cancer. The Torrent Pharmaceuticals Research Centre (TRC) is on a 30-acre greenfield site on the northern outskirts of Ahmedabad, the largest city in the State of Gujarat. The site itself fronts on to National Highway 8, which runs north from Ahmedabad to the state capital of Gandhinagar. The TRC complex (Figure 17.1) is comprised of a range of pharmaceutical research facilities and related support services, housed in a group of a dozen or so buildings. This study is focused on the main group of five three-storey laboratory buildings and one administrative block radiating from a circular-plan core building. Started in 1994, construction was all but complete in 1999 apart from some work around the main entrance to the administrative block, the laboratories having been occupied progressively since the latter part of 1996 (Hagan, 1999).
