ABSTRACT

We now return to Europe, this time to Bristol, England, nearly 20° latitude further north than Phoenix in Arizona, and on the eastern edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The RAC Regional Centre is at junction 15/20 where the M5 and M4, two major arteries of the UK's motorway network, intersect. The building is one of several regional centres of that country's Royal Automobile Club (RAC). Located on a 2 hectare site ∼10km north of the city of Bristol, this centre houses the round-the-clock command-and-control facilities for rescue services covering the south-west of England, together with more conventional 09:00–17:00 hours office activities. Designed to house 450 people, it now accommodates a total staff of ∼600.
