ABSTRACT

Designers with a social conscience Landscape architects, my interviews would indicate, are people with well-developed social consciences. Three of my interviewees expressly stated that they placed the welfare of people at the summit of their personal value systems, and many more justified their aesthetic or ecological endeavours by saying that, in some way, they were undertaken for people. Matters like natural beauty or ecological balance may also be important, but there is generally a social dimension to such concerns.
