ABSTRACT

Sediment generated by primary erosion is transferred downslope and onwards through the channel network. However, only a small proportion of this sediment actually exits the drainage basin. This is because a significant volume of sediment enters storage when it is deposited along the way. Sediment can be released from storage, when it is re-eroded at a later stage, and an individual particle of sediment can be stored and remobilised many times as it is transported through the fluvial system. In this chapter you will learn:

important. ● Controls on the amount of sediment that is deliv-

ered to the oceans. ● Sediment budgets. ● Human impacts on the sediment system.
