Why we need commemorative events
Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, the eleventh hour, of the eleventh Day, of the eleventh month, all commemorate the end of the war to end all wars. Occurring nearly a century ago, that war is beyond the memory of nearly all of us. It was the beginning of the break-up of the great colonial empires. Over half the world’s present countries did not exist at the time. And it was not the war to end all wars. Today, many of the countries are still engaged in military conflicts. How does Remembrance Day, approaching its centenary, fit into our modern world?
