ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Post Carbon Pathways research project. It provides an overview of the policy road maps needed to drive swift reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and of the actions needed to remove key obstacles standing in the way of the rapid implementation of these policies. The achievement of global commitments to an internationally verifiable decarbonisation road map, a shared approach to carbon pricing and a strengthened role for international governance institutions such as the International Energy Agency and International Renewable Energy Agency remain important goals. The aim of the Post Carbon Pathways project has been to capture and share lessons from a range of the most innovative and ambitious large-scale post-carbon economy transition strategies. Post Carbon Pathways project adopted a broad characterisation of post-carbon economy transitions as major, system-wide changes that are likely to involve breakthrough technologies and possibly fundamental changes in social aims, institutions, industrial structures and demand.
