ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the responses from both legacy industries and the cleantech sector to the current climate change policy and the opportunities for innovation and transformation in the future. The research is based on nearly a decade of in-depth work in the clean technology sector in British Columbia (BCs). The lack of financial support for the low carbon transition made it difficult for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to undertake action. The multilevel perspective is important to consider the context of low carbon transitions given the complex and interdependent requirements for scaling up low carbon business and technologies in current economic systems. Transitions to a low carbon future will likely be as a result of multiple actors working at multiple scales and levels. Asia is seen as both a problem and opportunity given trade links and BCs position as a transportation gateway between Canada and Asian markets.
