ABSTRACT
The East Asian financial crisis of 1997–8 arrived suddenly in the consciousness of the international community. It cut deeply into economic activity in many East Asian countries and sent shock waves through the international economy. It then departed as swiftly as it had come, leaving important but different legacies in various economies.
