ABSTRACT

Choice of devices and effectiveness In the UK, the ‘gold standard’ among copper IUDs for a parous woman with no menstrual problems is the banded T-Safe Cu 380A (Figure 15). Of statistically similar efficacy to the LNG IUS, this is much more effective (Figure 16) than the old Nova T in preventing both intrauterine and (dangerous) ectopic pregnancies. The Nova T 380, with a greater surface area of copper wire is its replacement. In the only RCT comparing Nova T 380 with T-Safe

Cu 380A (unhelpful names!), the wired IUD had a failure rate (3.6 per 100 women to 3 years) more than twice that of the banded one, a significant difference.
