ABSTRACT

The use of large doses of oestrogen is outmoded because of severe nausea and vomiting. Apart from mifepristone, a ‘hot potato’ politically so still unavailable for this use, three methods have now been shown to be effective: the insertion of a copper IUD, the combined oral emergency contraceptive (COEC) and the LNG-containing progestogen-only emergency contraceptive (POEC) (see Table 10). Marketed as Levonelle (2)™, both on prescription and in pharmacies, POEC has made COEC of interest only where the former cannot be ‘constructed’ by using multiple POP tablets.
