ABSTRACT

The copper IUD method has recognized contraindications (pp. 116-18) and the risks of pain, bleeding or infection. So this option, though it should be offered, is not often chosen by nulliparous women. However, in selected individuals IUD insertion may be appropriate (in categories listed in the Box below). This should generally be after cervical swabs (at least for Chlamydia trachomatis) and in high risk cases – as many of these are – with prophylactic antibiotic cover (p. 105), and contact tracing if STI test results later prove positive.
