In Search of a Theory of Human History W. E. B. Du Bois’s Theory of Social and Cultural Dynamics

In presenting Du Bois as a major theorist of social change, this study locates him in the tradition of scholars like Spengler and Toynbee.3 The many previous studies of Du Bois’s scholarship have generally overlooked this important dimension of his work, and have focused attention instead on his more special ized writings and endeavors. In contrast, this essay attempts to lay the founda tions for a broader appreciation of Du Bois’s intellectual contributions.
