Some explanations for child illness involve the parents' sexuality. A couple's having children at the wrong time or under the wrong circumstances is evidence of their sexual transgression and can lead to ostracism and shame, especially of very poor parents. The puffy skin of a child with malnutrition is said to be an ancestral warning, and the child's death may be a sign that an ancestral spirit has not been appeased.
