ABSTRACT

On the slopes o f Mt. Kilimanjaro, Francis Lema struggled to contain his anger as he spoke about his two dead children and two living sons, both severely stunted by malnutrition. Only one of the five children, a daughter, was healthy. As he protested the tragedies of his life, tears welled in his eyes, while Bibiana, his wife, sat quietly with a pained look on her face. “Can you tell me why this had to happen?” he asked.
