ABSTRACT

You have choices in five realms for school mathematics: the first three take place in the context of the last two. To begin with, you must choose among strategies for teaching/learning, strategies for assessment, and strategies for connecting mathematics to other subjects. The decisions you make in these areas become points of reference for reflection and enhanced comfort in grappling with the decision-making process in your ongoing development as a teacher. They help you to understand your convictions regarding the last two realms of choice even as they enact these last two choices, which include: your strategy for defining the relationships among reflection, assessment, and evaluation; and your strategy for structuring activities that enable students to move within and among various positions vis-a-vis the subject matter of mathematics. This essay will discuss each of the above realms before offering some concluding questions for you to consider.
