Economy hotels in China are serving an emerging domestic travel market in the country. As mentioned in previous chapters, the target consumers of economy hotels are those domestic Chinese travellers who may fi nd star-rated hotels too expensive and at the same time fi nd the low-end guesthouses ( Zhaodaisuo ) too shabby to accommodate their basic needs for hygiene and safety while travelling. There is no systematic research on these new travellers’ needs in selecting accommodation facilities, but we can well assume they demand hotel services in their own ways and these may cause the operations of economy hotel to be different from those of traditional star-rated hotels, or somehow unique when economy hotel operators choose to serve such a market with considerations of the service supply issues.
