ABSTRACT
John Addington Symonds (1840–93) was a cultivated European; his ‘History of the Renaissance in Italy’ is still both attractive and useful. He wrote a general introduction to English drama for the first volume of Havelock Ellis's Mermaid Series (see No. 49, below). His view of Marlowe is a vivid expression of the received critical opinion at that time.
