ABSTRACT
In Chapter 1, I pointed out that the approach of this book is to examine the health knowledge and healing practices of each society in their own terms, to look for their own internal logic and see how they fit with the rest of the knowledge and practices of that society. Further, I wish to try to relate healing systems to their social and economic arrangements more generally, particularly to the economic relations and the form of government.
