ABSTRACT

The knowledge and techniques available to us as human beings to control and manipulate conception are greater now than they have ever been; the manipulation of inherited characteristics is understood and on the agenda. The way these various techniques are applied is likely to have profound consequences for reproduction in the twenty-first century-not only for reproduction but for the social structure and social values more generally. If the framework of analysis which has been used throughout this book has any merit, it should help to guide us through the complexities which now confront us.
