ABSTRACT

The organizing intuition that frames the account to follow is that, somewhere

buried deep within the avalanche of contemporary smart talk about hierarchy

theory and the design-computation-hardware distinction (a form of Newspeak

about level this and level that practiced primarily by the friends of computer

simulation and homuncular modularity), is the germ of a newer, silicon-free way

of talking about different levels of psychological explanation. The start of a

glossary for this alternative language is, we will argue, to be found in Ina Uzˇgiris’

recent and posthumously published writings (e.g. Uzˇgiris 1999) – an interrupted

work-in-progress that this chapter is meant to help extend.
