ABSTRACT

We have chosen to present this case as it illustrates how confusion and uncertainty on the part of the therapist may be amplified in the wake of tensions between the ‘push’ of professional training and the ‘pull’ of supervision. Here, the author struggles with the anxiety of not knowing and the inherent tendency of many trainees to resolve their uncertainty in terms of a sense of some personal lack. People are complex, and working with people who are working towards change is even more so.
