ABSTRACT

In order to identify the more specific background theories, we will first distinguish between theories about individual interests and theories about the interests of society. The word individualist will be used to characterise any background theory about some individual interest. The word collectivist will be used to characterise any background theory about the interests of society as a whole. Like , these theories will still have a placeholder quality, as they are not yet the most specific background theories. But they provide the last step towards identifying the full set of background theories.
