ABSTRACT

Units 1-10 introduced some very basic terminology and concepts that are accepted and used in almost any serious discussion of word meaning. They are explained and discussed in the standard textbooks on semantics, though these generally devote more space to the discussion of ‘sentence meaning’ (which hasn’t really been on our agenda at all in this book). The following are especially good general introductions: Hofmann (1993), Lyons (1995) and Palmer (1976/1981). A more thorough two-volume introduction is Allan (1986). Lyons (1977) is the classic survey of almost every issue in semantics, which all experts take as their starting-point, and is also in two volumes.
