Couples treatment and the quest for analytic contact

Melanie Klein’s pioneering work with children and adults has expanded Freud’s clinical work and is now the leading worldwide infl uence in current psychoanalytic practice. The key Kleinian concepts include the total transference (Joseph 1985, 1989), projective identifi cation, the importance of counter-transference, psychic retreats (Steiner 1990, 1993), the container/ contained function (Bion 1959, 1962a, 1962b, 1963), enactment (Steiner 2006), splitting, the paranoid and depressive positions (Klein 1935, 1940, 1946), unconscious phantasy, and the value of interpreting both anxiety and defense. These components of the Kleinian approach have become so commonplace in the literature and adopted by so many other schools of practice it is easy to forget Object Relations theory and technique was Melanie Klein’s discovery.
