Captured and absorbed into the familiar

During the course of psychoanalytic treatment, some patients will attempt to transform the analytic process into something less than analytic and more of an acting out of desired, feared, and familiar object relational phantasies. Specifi cally, they kidnap the analyst’s interpretive function and convert it into friendly advice, authoritarian dictates, soothing reassurance, loving encouragement, stern disapproval, and other exaggerated one dimensional role images. Even when the analyst tries to interpret this element of transference, the patient may quickly absorb this into the non-analytic relationship they envision, hope, or fear is going on.
