ABSTRACT

As discussed in previous chapters, since we determine a sustained timbre to appear louder than a transient, by employing a limiter, it is possible to increase the perception of loudness in the mix or timbre. However, as with compression, a limiter can very quickly and quite severely modify the dynamic envelope of any sound, and therefore, it must be used with some caution. Judicious application of limiting with little regard to the dynamics can result in a timbre that appears louder and thus more appealing, despite completely destroying the timbres natural energy and presence.
