ABSTRACT

Redfield & White Limited was one of the largest department stores of its type in London. The store sold a wide variety of merchandise, from haberdashery to all types of household equipment. Each sales department sold a particular type of commodity and occupied a certain floor area within the store's building. Every department had its own internal structure, based primarily on order of seniority in the service of Redfield & White, and on age and sex. With the exception of men's wear, sports equipment and furniture, the various departments of the store were staffed mainly by women. Few departments had mixed male and female assistants. The labour force in the store was stable. The biggest labour turnover in the organisation occurred during the first few weeks of employment.
