ABSTRACT
Although the delimitation of areas for administrative purposes has been known in Arabia for at least the past fourteen centuries, the present pattern of provincial and district delimitation of the state of Saudi Arabia has distinct spatial characteristics which stem from the special structure of its central and local government, the geographical personality of its land and people, the foreign influences upon its different parts and the organization of its society.
