ABSTRACT

Among the most visible changes brought about by educational reforms in Kyrgyzstan since independence has been a continuing expansion of the higher education sector. Higher Education Institutes (vuzy) have increased from fewer than 10 to about 50; and enrolment from approximately 10 per cent of secondary school graduates to more than 40 per cent. These days, almost every other secondary school graduate becomes a university student, even though students must now pay tuition for their studies, and diplomas are no longer specifically linked to actual jobs as they once were.
