ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses issues relevant to volunteering for international students who are studying in Australia. The students, who studied hospitality, tourism and events, and whose experiences inform it, were part of a larger qualitative study focused on their leisure and travel experiences and behavior. It first examines some of the relevant literature on volunteering in the international context and provides a short background on the value of international education to Australia. And then it continues with a discussion of the leisure behavior of international students and their connectivity to people and communities through this behavior. It provides some reasons as to why international students do not volunteer, but again, these need to be explored in more detail and across a wider cohort of students. Finally, the chapter outlines how volunteering for international students can be incorporated into their time in Australia and how further research can help in understanding the group better in the context of volunteering.
