ABSTRACT

A decade or so into the new century European women are visibly more entrenched in the labour market than they were at the turn of the century, despite the setback imposed by the financial crisis. The female employment rate for EU-27 (20–64 years) stood at 62.1 per cent in 2010, nearly four points higher than ten years earlier (2001). Japan exhibited a higher rate in 2010 (63.7 per cent), while that for the United States was 3.5 points higher (65.6 per cent) despite much greater and still unrecovered losses since the onset of the financial crisis.
