ABSTRACT

Avondale Foods is a major supplier of processed and packaged vegetables based in Craigavon, Northern Ireland. The company supplies coleslaws and soups to multinational retailers across the UK. It wished to reduce the amount of packaging arising from increased business going to landfill. With advice from NISP (National Industrial Symbiosis Programme) the company worked with McAtee Recycling to sort, clean and recycle its waste. As a result, 256 tonnes of waste was diverted from landfill and the equivalent amount of new material was saved. Carbon dioxide emissions were reduced by 1,545 tonnes. The company saved nearly £21,000 per annum.
