ABSTRACT

China, the most populous country in the world with about 1.6 billion people, has made great economic strides over the past two decades, the same period during which Nigeria has witnessed some economic problems. These were caused by insensitivities of the previous regime in implementing policies that would abate the suffering of the people. In discussing China’s relations with Africa in general and with Nigeria in particular, this chapter examines the historical relationship that has existed between Africa and China. Regarding the present day, it highlights the implications of Niger Delta crisis, corruption, and leadership challenges to Chinese investments in Nigeria. The Niger Delta crisis has generated a lot of controversy among scholars of development, environmentalists, politicians, and government agencies regarding the need to find a lasting solution to the continuous threat to the economy of Nigeria and the world in general posed by this geopolitical zone.
