ABSTRACT

Over the lintel of the first school built for myopes in the United Kingdom was inscribed the motto, ‘Reading and writing shall not enter here’ (Lowenfeld 1974). While this epigram is not an entirely a fair reflection of educational practice in the school, it does serve to illustrate the enormous changes in educational practice regarding children with low vision. Discoveries by ophthalmologists, educators and psychologists have not only informed educational practice but have also influenced the design and development of learning environments for pupils with a visual impairment.
