ABSTRACT
English has an identity of its own as a separate and distinct subject area, but it also features in all other curriculum areas. English is often taught in different ways in both primary and secondary schools. In primary schools English teaching may be integrated and encompass many areas of the curriculum, while in secondary schools it is generally taught as a separate subject, often by a specialist teacher (Department of Education and Science (DES) 1989b).
